Creating a dried flower arrangement

02/05/12

Anyone can create a floral arrangement by simply adding a bunch of freshly-picked flowers to a vase and spreading the flowers out into an attractive floral display. That's a simple arrangement. Learn the basics of making a more extravagant display by following the simple directions in this article!

You will need to visit your local floral supply shop or the hobby store to get some supplies you will need to complete a floral arrangement. First, you will need to decide on what kind of arrangement you want to make. Do you want to make a traditional vase arrangement? How about a curved decoration that is known as a swag? Or, you could choose to make a floral arrangement using a wreath.

Let's say, for example, that you decide to make a wreath to hang on your front door. You will need a wreath, enough flowers for covering, florist's wire, and whatever other deocrations you may want to add to it to make it attractive. These may include a bow, some ribbon, and a plastic decoration for the middle.

Beginners can use foam wreaths. Foam wreaths are easier to use as flowers or other decorations can be stuck right into the foam. However, you would need to cover the foam thickly with flowers or decorations in order to hide the foam wreath underneath. Wreaths made from grape vine or other materials similiar to that, require the use of florist's wire to attach the article to the wreath.

There are several variations on how you can design your wreath, and we will give you some ideas to choose from, or, you can dream-up your own arrangement. You can attach the flowers to the wreath first, then wrap the ribbon around the wreath, spacing each ribbon apart, Or, you can wrap the ribbon first, leaving wide spaces free. Then add some flowers or other decorations in between the ribbon loops in the spaces. Another idea is to wrap the ribbon around the wreath and add a small bouquet or decoration in the middle. This can be placed on any side of the wreath middle, not necessarily on the bottom. Remember to use your imagination and be creative!

In order to attach the flowers and decorations to the wreath, you need to snip off pieces of the florist's wire using a pair of wire cutters. Make sure the pieces are long enough to do the job. Twist them onto the bottom of a single flower or a small bouquet. Leave enough wire to attach the other end to the wreath. Make sure to attach it tightly so the flower covers the wire underneath. Repeat this procedure all the way around the wreath if you want to cover it completely with flowers.

You can also use a hot-glue gun to attach the flowers and decorations onto your wreath. Either way will work fine.

After your wreath is completed. you can purchase a type of "holding spray" at your local craft store. It doesn't help hold the arrangement onto the wreath, but rather, it is a light type of spray that can set or help keep your arrangement. Hair spray acts in the same way, and actually can be used on your arrangement also.
